English with Art 

Course overview

Our English with Art course combines morning English lessons with an immersive afternoon art program designed around active, hands-on creation.
 

Cornwall—and St Agnes in particular—has long been a magnet for artists, where landscape, light, color, and weather shape every creative dialogue. We believe language develops naturally through shared experience: talking through making becomes a powerful, authentic way to learn or improve English.

Guided by experienced instructors and local artist Cath Hale, you’ll explore color, texture, and form while building real-world language confidence. Cath's practice and workshops provide the ideal environment for exploration, discussion, and making.

What to expect

Each day is split between structured learning and creative practice:
 

• Morning: General English lessons tailored to your level.

• Afternoon: Hands-on creative activities, outdoor exploration, and studio practice.
   

The course follows a complete learning cycle of theory, testing, activity, and reflection, allowing language to develop naturally through experience. Our goal is to create a piece of work to take home—whether that’s a journal, a print, a painting, or a collection of sketches.
 

Afternoons include:

• Exploring & Observing: Discovery walks, meeting local artists, and visits to galleries like Tate St Ives, Jackson Foundation or the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden across Cornwall.

• Creating & Making: Plein air sketching and painting, drawing, printmaking, pressing, mixed-media work, and journaling.

• Finding Your Voice: Experimenting with light, shade, and texture while developing your personal medium.

Who is it for?

This course is ideal for learners who want to move beyond the traditional classroom and learn English through meaningful, hands-on activities. It is particularly suited to you if you:
 

• Have a passion for art, crafting, and visual expression.

• Prefer learning through active engagement, and real-life creative projects.

• Enjoy collaborative discussions centered on color, emotion, and local landscape.

• Want to leave Cornwall with both stronger English skills and a personalised piece of art.

Practical details

• Creative sessions and outdoor sketching are weather-dependent and tailored to the season.

• Afternoon activities feature a blend of studio time, outdoor exploration, and local gallery visits.

• Transportation to and from local activity sites is organised and provided.

• Comfortable clothing suitable for painting/making and sensible walking shoes are recommended.

• All core creative materials are provided, though personal sketchbooks or preferred tools are always welcome.

• No previous art experience is required—the course is designed for all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced creators.
