Autumn at Skool: Meet the people at the heart of your language journey

As Autumn approaches, things are starting to quiet down here in Cornwall. It’s been a busy and wonderful year at Skool, welcoming many new faces as well as our returning students, which is always a joy. For those who visited us this year, we hope you’re still smiling at the memories of impromptu swims (and wrapping up in Toby’s infamous wearable beach towel afterwards), pizza at Schooners, and hikes to beaches that felt more like Greece than the UK. And now, as the pace slows a little, it feels like the right time to look back and reconnect with what Skool is all about, especially for those new to us.

At Skool, learning English is about more than memorising grammar or vocabulary. We are not your typical language school. We are about connection, culture, and confidence…the spoken words. We are a small team, but we take pride in what we do. Our students come from across Europe, aged 35 to 70, and from all walks of life. Very quickly, they adapt to the slower pace of life here in Cornwall. For many, it’s their first view of the ocean: standing on a vast beach, taking a deep, calming breath, something they may not have done in a long time. We understand that feeling well. At Skool, learning English goes hand in hand with experiencing life.

Our approach is practical and conversation-focused. While we cover grammar and language rules, we mainly emphasise speaking English in real-life situations. We might read a poem and invite you to share what it means to you. We discuss the proper Cornish way to enjoy a cream tea, with scones homebaked by our very own teacher Sam. You might discover the many different styles of Cornish rain or pick up the latest surf jargon. Some of our students have even found themselves in the middle of a traditional pub quiz on a quiet evening at the Railway Inn. With a maximum of six students per class, lessons are tailored to individual needs. We focus on practical, conversation-first learning, using content from British and Cornish history, literature, film, music, and more. The result? Students gain confidence and fluency faster than in a traditional classroom setting.

We study in the mornings and often spend our afternoons doing various activities. You can join our English with Art and Culture course, take part in the Water Sports programme, attend General English classes, or enjoy English with Walking sessions.

Toby, our Skool Founder, explains: Our Skool programmes are designed with connection in mind – we connect through the English language. What is crucial to progress in English is feeling comfortable, so that when mistakes happen, they are part of the process of learning. We’ve been so fortunate to have so many clients from all over the world who make working in Skool a delight. And we get to share our beautiful landscape too. We consider ourselves very lucky

With a team of qualified and experienced teachers, every student receives personal attention and support tailored to their learning style. Tom Knight, one of our teachers has this to say:

I love teaching at Skool Cornwall, because it’s a place  where real learning can happen, real shared experiences lead to genuine deep learning that is centred around people and their passions, and as a teacher that is gold dust.

Learning doesn’t stop when the lesson ends. That’s why our host families are an essential part of the Skool experience. Many have welcomed students for years, sharing their homes, stories, and favourite local spots. Our hosts Annie and Trystan explain:

We enjoy hosting because every guest is unique and brings their own story, which is always very interesting. What matters most to us is sharing a piece of Cornish life, whether it’s showing our favourite beaches or cooking together in the evenings, it’s all about the connection. By the end of their stay, it often feels like they leave as friends.

Things may be starting to quiet down here at Skool, but our minds are already buzzing with ideas and plans for another fantastic year ahead. We’ll be sharing our new course plan soon, and we’d love to hear from you if you have any questions or want to find out more. We can’t wait to welcome you to Cornwall and help you make the most of your English learning journey.

PS: Feeling spontaneous? There are still a few spaces left for 2025, and we’d love to welcome you to experience Autumn with us.
